The Pall.

Quite simply a piece of card with starched linen or other fabric stretched across it. Although its use is optional its purpose is to allow the priest to cover the chalice when there is a danger of insects or other objects falling into the wine or the Precious Blood which would contaminate it. Its upper surface is usually decorated or embroidered.

When the altar is prepared it is placed to the right of the corporal above the purificators.
